CURRICULUM

At the British International School, Riyadh (BIS) we have the opportunity to devise our own curriculum. We are able to select those parts of the English National Curriculum which are appropriate for our students in their particular context. Our broad aim is to encourage a love of learning for its own sake and to encourage students to think independently.

In the early years of School, we ensure that our children develop both their academic and their social skills and we strive to put into effect a philosphy that recognises that each child is unique. At Key Stage 2, children can begin to take off .. reading skills develop rapidly .. writing increases in subtlety and range of expression .. the fundamental skills of arithmetical calculation are mastered .. they embark on their scientific education and they make similar progress and exciting discoveries for all other areas of the braod curriculum. In the first three years of senior school (Years 7-9), the pace quickens; we try to provide our students with as broad an education as possible and to instil in them the work habits to be successful in later years. At GCSE level, all students must take a common core of subjects which includes English, maths, science and a modern foreign language. Students then choose four or five other subjects.

In the Sixth Form, we offer A Level courses since a majority of our students go on to university in the UK. However, A Levels also have international currency and we support applications to British universities and to institutions in many other courntries. Students take four courses to AS Level and are encouraged to continue with four subjects in the Upper Sixth to A2 level, but most will take three subjects.

We aspire through our curriculum policy to ensure that those students who spend all or greater part of their school careers with us will emerge well-educated in the true sense of that word.
