Curriculum

The curriculum is the main focus by which the overall aims and the specific strategic plan of the British School are pursued.

It is broad and in line with the National Curriculum of England and Wales. English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technology form the common core but each area of learning and experience is given appropriate attention in terms of time and resources. For curriculum matters, the Year Leader or Class Teacher can usually deal with most queries, but each subject area has its own Curriculum Manager and Deputy Managers whose responsibilities are whole school.

The overall attainment of pupils at the British School is high. Year 6 sit the Standard Assessment Tests (S.A.T.s). In Year 9 students sit a combination of S.A.T.s and Cambridge Checkpoint assessments. Our results are far in excess of United Kingdom maintained schools and comparable with those of any member school of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (I.A.P.S.) in the U.K., reaching the mid to late 90's in percentage terms in all areas tested i.e. English and Mathematics in all years and Science in Years 6 and 9. However, the School is not complacent and we always look for improvement in these and in all other standardised tests used. These tests, alongside specific subject tests and continuous assessment, enable the School to monitor its progress from year to year.

The school also follows the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) scheme at Key Stage 4; on average students are well above the U.K. national average with the majority of passes at level B and above. In KS5 the students study courses leading to Advanced Level. It is expected that students will begin with four AS Levels in Year 12 and carry three forward in Year 13 to Advanced Level.
