EARLY YEARS

Welcome to our Early Years Department!

The Early Years Department provides a bridge between home and school. Children of 3 and 4 years of age respectively are admitted into our FS1 and FS2 classes which form the Early Years Department. During these early formative years, children begin to make sense of their world and develop their skills and knowledge. Quality learning experiences, to provide the foundation for later learning, are therefore essential.

This stage in education is pre-National Curriculum and is called the Foundation Stage. This is a 2 year programme divided into 6 areas of learning, providing a framework for the early years curriculum, working towards early learning goals.

The six areas of learning are:

  1. Personal, social and emotional development
  2. Communication, language and literacy
  3. Mathematical development
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the world
  5. Physical development
  6. Creative development

Foundation 1 is accommodated in a purpose built, self contained unit. Our resources include an outdoor play area, access to the ICT suit, music, PE and swimming lessons all taught by specialists. The school shares the high expectations of parents for their students to acquire a wealth of knowledge and understanding and a range of appropriate skills. The F1 page gives details of the programme the students follow.

In Foundation 2 students continue to develop their skills and understanding. There is a strong emphasis in practical exploration. Music, PE and swimming continue to be taught by specialist teachers. Throughout their time in F2 children are encouraged to be as independent as possible and the learning is carefully planned to prepare them for entry into Year 1. The F2 page gives more details of the programme followed.

The aim for our children in the Foundation Stage is for them all to feel happy, confident and secure and cared for in an attractive, well resourced environment. They are motivated to learn and enjoy a sense of personal achievement, which is celebrated by all. A high priority is given to the process of learning, and opportunities are provided to learn through play, people and the environment. We strive to provide a friendly, welcoming environment where our students can begin their journey as confident lifelong learners.
