The school prides itself on being actively involved in supporting various charities, both locally and internationally.
Our many fundraisng events have been embraced by the staff, students and parents of the British International School, Riyadh, along with a very supportive community of companies who have contributed generously to our nominated causes.
Our "fun" methods of raising funds and awareness of thoroughly worthy causes are well organised and successful methods have included cakes sales, bring & buy sales, non-uniform days, raffles, pizza & donut sales along with event sponsorship through sports and art. Of course, all this is in conjuction with class lessons raising student awareness of global plights.
Our projects have included:
Haiti Earthquake Appeal - over SR75,000 was raised, when the staff & students of BISR asked what they could do to help the people of Haiti. During the course of a month, along with the regular cake bake sales, various students got together and sold smoothies & cakes on their compounds, others washed cars, while some arranged compound collections. The CUBS walked for miles and miles for sponsorship, profits from the tea towel sales were donated and staff paid handsomely for a fish & chip lunch! Funds were split between Save the Children and Rivers of Hope Orphanage in Haiti.
Pakistan Flood Appeal - At the end of four weeks of activities and events, we raised a total of SR43,399 which is over $11,000. The money raised will go to the Imran Khan Flood Relief Fund (more details can be found at http://pukaar.org/index.htm) and the kindly donated relief items will be sorted and shipped to Pakistan.
Nepal Orphanage, in conjunction with seven students from the International Gold Award (DofE) - with the help of the Award leaders, staff, students and parents of the school, we managed to raise a staggering SR70,000, (almost $20,000) to donate to three orphanages in Nepal. In turn these orphanages welcomed the BISR students as volunteers for five days. Books, clothing and sports equipment were also taken to Nepal.
Pukhtoon Community School Project,
In view of this weekend’s terrorist attack by a child suicide bomber, with many fatalities, near the University of Mardan, Pakistan, we have decided to withdraw BISR’s involvement from the Pukhtoon project. It is within the security zone of this university that the school which we are supporting is due to be built. The design of the school by post-graduate rchitecture students at Sheffield University is at an advanced stage. Its construction will still proceed. It will be funded by charities to be established in both the UK and Pakistan. Local businesses have been very supportive and it is an expectation that the school will be fully funded and constructed for the Pukhtoon community in due course.
