The British International School Riyadh once again entered this prestigious sports event for children in years 5 and 6. The host school, Modern English School, Cairo, Egypt, put on a fantastic event. They set high standards with their superb organisation, from the pre–event information to the final evening banquet and presentation.
Our party of 25 children and 5 staff set off to compete in the following sports; swimming, athletics, football, netball and basketball. Each event was fiercely competitive and whilst not achieving any first places, there was some success with the best being the netball team finishing fifth out of twelve teams, Shruti Anand coming third in the sprint final and Cameron Ball breaking his school 600m record by 10 seconds in a time of 1min. 53 secs, but only achieving second place in the race and finishing fifth in the sprint final.
However, all our competitors rose to the occasion and for those younger performers in year 5, it has given them the incentive to try harder next time.
A trip to the pyramids certainly proved enjoyable, particularly for Mr Morgan, and this was yet another example of the excellent organisation.
The final evening banquet completed a memorable time and we were all sad to leave the Dusit Thani Hotel for the flight back home.
Thank you to the staff involved, Mr Dutch, Mr Don – Carolis, Mrs Walley, Miss Welford and Mrs Hills and also to those who helped with the training. Thanks to our sponsors BMI, RGGB Riyadh, BISR PTA, and Astra, as well as the kit suppliers Sportswear International and Sun and Sand Sports Riyadh.
Finally, thanks to the children who were fine ambassadors for the school.
